SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Yotes travelled to Rohnert Park to compete against the Seawolves in a rescheduled match that was originally scheduled to take place on October 21
st. Sonoma State would challenge the CSUSB until the very last play of the match. The Yotes would outlast the Seawolves, taking the match, 3-2.
In the first set,
Alexis Cardoza had four kills. Both
Asia Clarke and
Melissa Garciglia collected three kills each.
Jalyn Hayes connected on two blocks for two points. The Yotes hit at a .314 percentage for 13 kills as a team. CSUSB's defense kept the Seawolves to 11 kills at a .098 hitting percentage. The Yotes won the first set comfortably, 25-17.
The Seawolves came out sprinting and went on a 6-0 run in the second set. The Yotes collected 11 kills hitting at a .156 percentage. Garciglia added six kills to her stat sheet in the second set. Sonoma State had seven blocks that deeply affected CSUSB's ability to score. The gap created by the Seawolves at the start was too much for the Yotes to overcome. Sonoma State took the second set, 25-20.
The third set started with both teams scoring back and worth. It was Garciglia again in the third set connecting on five kills that turned the tide for the Yotes. Even though the Seawolves went for 12 kills on the set compared to CSUSB's 10 kills, the Yotes took the set with the same score as the first, 25-17.
CSUSB is rarely forced into a fourth set, but Sonoma State challenged every aspect of the Yotes game. Cardoza connected on six kills on the set as well as a couple critical blocks. It would not be enough for CSUSB as the Seawolves took the fourth set, 25-22.
Even more rarely does a volleyball match for the Yotes go into the fifth set, but CSUSB found Sonoma State difficult to shake. The fifth set both teams would exchange point for point. The match was neck and neck when the Yotes took the serve with the score 14-14.
Marlee Nunley found Cardoza who connected on the kill to take the lead 15-14. In an extremely challenging rally, Cardoza went for the kill, but it was returned by Sonoma State. Clarke would hit a dig to Nunley who went and found Cardoza for the final kill of the match. Yotes took the set, 16-14.
Cardoza finished the match with 18 kills, 14 digs, and five blocks. Nunley collected 45 assists, 11 digs, and five blocks. Garciglia connected for 17 kills, four digs, and two blocks. Hayes had an amaznig defensive showing with 10 blocks and had seven kills. Patton also added seven kills as Clarke connected on six kills.
Makena Overbey tallied 22 digs on the match.
