SAN BERNARDINO – In what may go down as one of the most improbable finishes in Coyote baseball history, CSUSB scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn an 8-7 victory over No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay in the opener of the teams' doubleheader Saturday at Fiscalini Field.
The Otters came back to post an 11-5 win in the second game heading into Sunday's series finale that begins at 11 a.m. at Fiscalini Field.
Game 1: Coyotes 8, CSU Monterey Bay 7
The historics started out simply with
Aaron Beckley leading off with a single. Pinch-hitter
Tyler Staab followed with another single and the two moved over one base on a wild pitch.
Billy Hamilton drove in Beckley on an infield grounder and
Richard Mount followed with a walk to put runners at 1
st and 3
rd with one out.
Remington Miller drove in Staab on a single through the left side and
Andrew Harrison followed with another single and the Coyotes trailed 7-2.
Michael Castello then responded with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, scoring Mount and
Nick Massari followed with a ground-out that scored Miller and the Coyotes drew to within 7-4.
Christian Gomez, the ninth hitter in the inning, collected an RBI-single to right that scored Harrison and the Coyotes were within two runs.
After Beckley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Staab then came through with a three-run double to right for the game-winner that emptied the Coyotes' dugout.
Staab had two hits for the Coyotes, who were out-hit 12-9.
Kyle Abel earned the win in one inning of relief.
CSUMB's Will Anderson was the starter and he had eight strikeouts in eight innings.
Game 2: CSU Monterey Bay 11, Coyotes 5
Aaron Beckley and
Curtis Cassise each had two hits, but the Otters came back in the second game and scored runs in every inning but the first for the split.
David Garcia had three RBI and two hits for CSUMB. Brian Haggett and Mark Hurley also had two hits for the Otters.
Jeff Owen improved to 8-1 on the year. He had six strikeouts.
Matt LeVert took the loss in 2 2/3 innings.
