The CCAA has announced the 2020 Fall Academic Honor Roll. CSUSB student-athletes in cross country, volleyball, and men's and women's soccer set records for the third consecutive season, as this semester saw 39 Yotes named to the Honor Roll.
Previously named the Fall All-Academic Team, Honor Roll distinction is given to student-athletes who are a sophomore in academic standing with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3. The standard requirement of competing in a conference-sponsored sport has been waived for 2020-21, as honorees must be a member of their team in good standing.
The Yotes led all south-region CCAA institutions with a fall-record 39 Honor Roll honorees, despite CSUSB sponsoring one less sport than the majority of their south-region competitors.
"I am pleased that our student-athletes continue to perform well in the classroom," Faculty Athletic Representative,
J. Paul Vicknair, said. "The continuing pandemic has caused disruption to the lives of our student-athletes with the suspension of all athletic competition. Despite this, we had a record number of student-athletes earn a spot on the conference honor roll. Our coaches should also be commended for their commitment to academic success as well as excellent athletic performance."
Women's soccer led the way for the Yotes with 14 honorees, doubling their number from last year with five two-time honorees. Cross country and volleyball both had nine award winners. Both increased their total from last year by two. Cross country had four two-time winners and
Destiny Jacobo was a three-time honoree. Volleyball recorded four two-time winners and
Leilia To'omalatai,
Mikaela Grove, and
Alexis Cardoza all earned the award for the third time and
Kaili Scott had a perfect 4.0 GPA. Men's soccer had seven honorees with three two-time honorees.
"I continue to be so impressed and appreciative of the accomplishments of our student-athletes," CSUSB Director of Athletics
Shawn Chin-Farrell said. "Given the unprecedented adversity they have faced for almost a year now, to continue to set records in the classroom and stay engaged like they have, it is simply an incredible accomplishment. I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, and the effort they have made thus far, and know when we emerge from this time, we will be stronger for it."
An impressive 478 men and women were honored as members of the 2020 Fall Academic Honor Roll across the conference, shattering the previous best by 127.
The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season - fall, winter and spring - for all CCAA sponsored sports. The CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. The Winter Academic Honor Roll will honor men's and women's basketball players, with the Spring Academic Honor Roll consisting of student-athletes from men's and women's golf, men's and women's track and field, softball and baseball. The remainder of the seasonal academic selections will be announced at the conclusion of the spring term after grades are finalized.
