Right-hander
Aaron Brooks, who became Cal State San Bernardino's all-time leader in innings pitched as a junior, was selected in Round 9 by the Kansas City Royals and the 276th player overall in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player draft Tuesday.
The San Bernardino native was the first player selected from the California Collegiate Athletic Association and is the first Coyote to have been selected by the Royals in school history.
“I'm proud and happy for Aaron and for his family,'' Coyotes head coach
Don Parnell said. “Aaron has been adamant about becoming a professional baseball player and that dream came true today. Aaron improved upon his consistency, maturity and baseball knowledge in his three years with us and he'll be a better professional from all of those experiences here at CSUSB.''
Brooks led the Coyotes' pitching staff with 92 innings and owned a 5-7 record with a 2.74 ERA. He had 78 strikeouts, walked just eight batters and had three complete games with one shutout. In just three seasons, the San Bernardino native already is the all-time leader in innings pitched with 247.1 innings. Opponents hit just .241 against the right-hander.
He finished third in the NCAA in walks allowed per 9 innings.
Brooks becomes the 26th player to have been selected in the MLB Draft in Parnell's 20 years at the helm. RHP
Brandon Cunniff was selected by the Florida Marlins in Round 27 of last year's draft.
