Cal State San Bernardino and Tampa switched spots in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Div. II Top 25 poll this week with the Coyotes dropping from No. 2 to No. 3 and Tampa moving up to No. 2.
The Coyotes were 3-1 at the Phoenix Inn-GNAC Challenge tournament hosted by Western Oregon, beating the host Wolves, Central Washington and Western Washington but lost to No. 23 Alaska-Anchorage, 3-0.
Meanwhile, Concordia-St. Paul, the three-time defending NCAA Div. II champions, had their record 75-match win streak snapped in a 3--0 loss at the hands of Grand Valley State of Michigan in the Tampa tournament. The Golden Bears went on to beat host No. 2 Tampa, No. 9 Central Missouri and Northern Kentucky.
CSUSB opens California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday at 7 p.m. in Coussoulis Arena against Cal State Monterey Bay, currently 3-0. San Francisco State will be Saturday's foe, also at 7 p.m.
Jane Chafeh was the lone Coyote named to the all-tournament team at Western Oregon. The senior outside hitter averaged 4.31 kills and 1.85 digs in the four matches with 20 kills apiece against Central Washington and Western Washington.
In CCAA conference stats through the first weekend of play, CSUSB's all-America middle blocker Samantha Middleborn leads the CCAA in hitting percentage with a prodigious .679 -- 39 kills in 53 attacks with just three hitting errors in four matches. Junior Megan Johnson is seventh at .340.
Sophomore setter Camille Smith posted 128 assists in four matches and leads the CCAA at 10.67 assists per set. Chafeh is No. 2 in kills per set at 4.31, trailing Lauren Walsh of SFSU (4.51 kps on 77 kills). Coyotes junior Kelcie Tolan ranks No. 6 in digs at 4.0 per set with 52 in four matches up north.
