PALM DESERT — No. 5 Chico State shot a 285 (3-under par) to take over first place with a 577 two-round total at the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf West/Central Super Regional. The Wildcats were just one shot back coming into the round and now lead by three strokes over second place and No. 20-ranked Sonoma State.

Sonoma State shot matched Chico's 285 to move into second with a two-round total of 579 . The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion, Western New Mexico held a four shot lead late in the second round and were 2-under par at one point, but finished with a 289 (1-over par) for a 582 two-round total. No. 21 and California Collegiate Athletic Association Champion Cal State Monterey Bay is in fourth with a 592. No. 10 Cal State Stanislaus, No. 22 Colorado-Colorado Springs and No. 16 Western Washington, that lead after round one, are all tied for fifth at 594 (18-over par).

Only the top five teams, and the top two individuals whose team did not qualify, advance to the national tournament.

Chico State got a huge push from co-leader Brandon Harkins and third-place Kyle Souza who both shot a 3-under par 69, tying the tournament low. Harkins had five birdies on the day, four on the front nine alone. Western New Mexico's Gordon Webb is tied with Harkins after shooting a 1-under par 71, following up a first-round 69 on day one. Webb had three birdies with a 34 on the front nine, but had two bogeys and just one birdie on the back. Sonoma State's Ryan Carter is in fourth after he birdied the last two holes to shoot a 69.

The final round tees off at 7:30 a.m.

Cal State San Bernardino matched its first day total with a 303 (15-over par) and moved to 11th.

Kenny Pigman took three shots off his first day with a second-day par-72 to lead CSUSB and stands in a tie for 15th. The junior fired three birdies in his last four holes on his first nine, starting the day on the backside. Pigman had four birdies in all, but also had four bogeys, including three in on the final nine holes. Thomas Chu took a stroke off Monday's scores with a 75 to leave him in a tie for 36th. Gene Webster Jr., Joe Alldis and BK Kim all shot a 6-over par 78. Webster Jr. and Alldis now sit in a tie for 62nd while Kim is in a tie for 90th.
