BAKERSFIELD — Misty Vu scored three goals, including the game-winner, as eighth-seeded Cal State San Bernardino defeated ninth-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay, 11-9, in the team’s opening match of the Western Water Polo Association Championship tournament. The Coyotes then dropped a 19-2 game to top seeded and No. 8 Loyola Marymount.

Emily Hove, Jennifer Goetz, and Kelsey Morino had two goals each in the win over CSUMB

CSUSB got on the board first with a quick score by Ashley de Jonckheere and Morino added two goals, as the Coyotes ended the first quarter with a 3-2 lead.

The Otters scored the tying goal early in the second and hung with the Coyotes throughout the quarter. Hove and Vu each notched a score as CSUSB led at halftime 5-3.

Cal State San Bernardino extended their lead to 9-5 late in the third quarter on goals by Linzie Quist, Hove, and two by Goetz. However, Cal State Monterey went on a 4-0 run and pulled within one, 9-8.

The Coyotes defense stiffened up, though. Goalie Bryanna Burns allowed only one goal in the final five minutes and Vu scored twice, as CSUSB held on for the 11-9 victory. Burns notched nine saves in the contest.

In the second game of the day, it was Vu and Kaitlin Hartman who put CSUSB on the board in the second quarter after the Lions scored the first seven goals of the game. LMU scored four goals in the first, six in the second and third and three in the fourth to put away the Coyotes.

Burns picked up eight saves in the loss.

CSUSB will play the winner of Santa Clara and Chapman tomorrow at 3:40 and will then play at 10:30 a.m. or noon Sunday.
