PHOENIX — #Gene Webster Jr.# shot a back-to-back 67 in the first and second rounds of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational to finish the day in first place.
The senior has a four-stroke lead on Jonathan Cockerill (CSU Stanislaus), Eric Frazzetta (Chico State) and Scott Crichton (Western New Mexico) who are all tied for second place. Each of those three are also their team's leader as No. 16 Stanislaus sits in first place at 559, 11 strokes ahead of second-place and No. 3 Chico State and 12 strokes ahead of Western New Mexico.
The Coyotes shot a 288 in the first round, putting them in fourth place, but moved back three spots after posting a 290 in the second round.
Thomas Chu was right on Webster Jr.'s heels after firing a 69 in the first round, heading into the second round in a tie for seventh. Chu then shot a 77 in the second round and is now in a tie for 35th. Nick Kelly will start the third round in 47th after shooting a combined 148 (74-74).
Joe Alldis and
Kenny Anthony each shot a 153 as Alldis had a 78 in the first and a 75 in the second while Anthony had a 79 and a 74. Both are tied for 67th.
The final round will be played tomorrow morning on the 72-hole course.
