Results (Through Round 1)
SAN BERNARDINO — Cal State San Bernardino and 17 other teams needed just a little more light to be able to finish the second round of the Coyote Classic Collegiate Golf Tournament Monday, but the field stopped just two holes short of completing the second round.
That may be exactly what the Coyotes wanted after a lackluster first round in which CSUSB shot 300 to finish the first round in 12th place in the field of 18 teams competing at Arrowhead Country Club.
Gene Webster Jr. was a bright spot for the Coyotes, shooting a 69 with a 37 on the front nine and a 32 on the back to finish fifth.
Thomas Chu is tied for 35th with a 74 while
Joe Alldis is tied for 58th with a 77.
Kenny Anthony shot an 80 to finish in a tie for 82nd while Jake Lynch shot an 81 to finish 84th.
Kyle Souza of Chico State fired a four under par 66 on the par-70, 6,500-yard course to enable the first place Wildcats to finish the first round with a 278 score, four shots ahead of second-place Cal State Monterey Bay (282). Chico State is ranked No. 3 in the latest Golf World/Nike Division II Coaches Poll. Sonoma State, the 2009 NCAA Division II champion, is third at 288. 10 shots back. Barry University, ranked No. 1 in the Division II poll, sits in fourth place while No. 9 Western Washington is fifth. Also in the field is No. 24 Abilene Christian and No. 25 Cal State Stanislaus.
University of Redlands, ranked No. 12 in the Golf World/Nike Division III Coaches Poll, sits in 13th spot, just behind the Coyotes. The field will finish the final two holes of the second round at approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday before closing the 54-hole tournament with the third and final round.
