So much for scheduling easy wins in the early season for Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes took on the defending NAIA Naitonal Champion, California Baptist University in the season opener at Coyote Softball Park, falling 3-1 in the first game and 11-0 in the nightcap.
The Coyotes (0-2) had a chance to take the opener with the bases loaded and two outs, but left three stranded to end the game. It was all Cal Baptist in the second as CBU's Kendall Gorham hit two of her three home runs on the day in the second game.
Brianne Godfredson tossed a no-hitter through the first three innings of the opener and quickly got the first two outs in the top of the fourth. California Baptist's Kendall Gorham then broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to right. Godfredson then closed out the inning with a ground out and enduced a ground ball to start the fourth. The Lancer's Tina Galinato laid down a bunt and stopped on a dime just in front of home plate for a single. Nina Cabrales then cleared the bases with a home run to left.Godfredson was lifted for Cassidy Lee.
The Coyotes got on the board in the sixth when Britney Butler lifted her first home run of the year with a solo shot down the left field line. After two straight outs, Courtney Wilhelms singled to right center, but a ground out to second based ended any threat. CBU put a pair of runners on base with two walks in the top of the seventh, but Lee was able to force back-to-back fly balls to end the threat. It took the Coyotes two outs before Priscilla Curiel doubled down the left field line and Stefanie Quinn was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Britney Butler loaded the bases with a walk setting up freshman Kat Kolde in a battle with the 2009 NAIA Pitcher of the Year Tory Ferreira. Kolde fouled a few back against the backstop before Ferreira retired her to end the game.
Ferreira (1-0) went the full seven innings for the Lancers allowing just one run on six hits while striking out four. Godfredsen allowed three runs on just three hits and struck out four. Lee closed the final 2.2 innings and allowed just two hits.
Gorham picked up in the second game where she left off in the first with a two run home run in the top of the first and CBU went up 3-0 in the third when Nicole Shoemaker hit a double down the left field line to drive home Ashley Boyd from second. The Lancers added another on a Gorham single to lead 4-0. The Lancers added another run in the fifth and six more in the seventh.
Emma Holden (1-0) recorded the win for CBU, striking out twelve in six innings of work and allowed just one hit. Eric Prentice (0-1) took the loss throwing 2.1 innings.
The Coyotes are back in action in Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Turlock, Calif., for the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational.
