PALM DESERT -- Davon Davis scored 18 points and Bryan LeDuc added 17 and nine rebounds as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Westmont College, 68-64, in an exhibition game before about 200 fans at Xavier Prep High School Wednesday night.
The Coyotes utilized only eight players in the game and all eight scored as they found some things that worked and some things that didn't against a veteran Westmont team that beat CSUSB in 2008 in Santa Barbara in a non-conference game.
CSUSB shot 45 percent from the field (28 of 62) and 33 percent from the three-point line (six of 18) and narrowly outrebounded the Warriors 36-34 in the 40-minute contest, played just a mile from CSUSB's Palm Desert campus.
LeDuc, the graduate student transfer from University of the Pacific, hit seven of 12 field goal attempts in 38 minutes. Davis, who sat out last season after being a reserve center in 2007-08, hit eight of 18 shots, collected five rebounds and had four assists in 31 minutes.
David Jefferson, a transfer from Imperial Valley College had six points and seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in 31 minutes. Junior Ryan Kinney knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points. Junior guard Aaron Hill distributed the ball well from the point, finishing with nine assists in 37 minutes.
The Coyotes led 36-33 at intermission but trailed only once in the second half, 42-43 on a three-pointer by Westmont's Andrew Schmalbach with 14:25 left in the game. However, Lawrence Tyson responded immediately with a three of his own for a 45-43 CSUSB lead and the Coyotes stayed in front the rest of the way.
The team's lead was seven at 58-51 on a layup by LeDuc off an assist by Davis with 6:04 left in the game.
Evan Haines had a double-double for Westmont with 21 points on 10 of 12 shooting (83 percent) and 10 rebounds. Dan Rasp added 13 points for the Warriors who hit 43 percent of their shots (24 of 56) and made 13 of 18 foul shots compared to just six of nine for CSUSB.
The Coyotes open the regular season on Nov. 20 at Pepperdine University.
