Coyotes finish 13th in golf tourney

CSUSB loses ground despite improving its second-round score at Wood Ranch

    SIMI VALLEY -- Cal State San Bernardino's men's golf team shot better in round three than in round two but still lost ground and finished 13th Tuesday in the 17-team field at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge at Wood Ranch Golf Club.
    The Coyotes, competing against 14 NCAA Division I schools, started the day in eighth place and shot six shots under their second round total in the 54-hole tournament, but lost five spots in the order but were only seven shots out of eighth-place where they started the day.
    Senior all-American Gene Webster Jr. put together a one-under-par round of 71 on the par-72, 6,761-yard course to wind up 11th in the field of 96 golfers with a 54-hole total of 214, two under par. Webster shot 70 and 73 on Monday. Webster led all golfers in scoring on the par-3s. He was three-under on the short holes with a stroke average of  2.75.
    Sophomore Bryan Kim, who was one-under par 143 after two rounds thanks to a five-under 67 in the second round on Monday, shot 75 and finished in a tie for 26th spot with a two-over-par total of 218.
    Senior Joe Alldis, who experienced the best of times and the worst of times on Monday after an 69-83 start, wound up in a tie for 37th spot with a closing-round, one-under-par 71 for a total of 223.
    With the withdrawal of Coyotes senior Thomas Chu after an opening round of 75, sophomore Nick Kelley was the fourth team member to count his score and Kelley produced rounds of 75, 81, 81 to finish in a tie for 90th spot at 237.
    The Coyotes team produced four eagles during the tournament, two by Kim to lead the field in that category.
    University of Pacific took the team title with a 21-under-par total of 843, a new tournament record, beating runnerup UC Riverside by eight shots. Cal State Northridge varsity was third 12 strokes back of UCR followed by UC Santa Barbara in fifth.
    Alex Johnson of UOP captured medalist honors with a nine-under-par total of 207, edging Cal State Northridge golfer Nick Delio and UCR's Kevin Fitzgerald by one shot.
    The golf team will resume collegiate competition on Feb. 28, 2010, hosting the Coyote Collegiate Classic at Arrowhead Country Club.
