McKINLEYVILLE -- Freshman Samantha Borman finished 21st in a field of 100 runners Saturday as the young Cal State San Bernardino women's cross country team posted an eighth-place finish at the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Championship.
Borman, the team's No. 1 runner all season, finished in 23:50.9 over the 6,000-meter course at the Beau Pre Golf Course near Humboldt State University, the host for the meet.
Three Coyotes finished in the top 50 with freshman Rebekah Frazier in 34th spot at 24:35.6 and senior Anjuli Nieto 39th in 24:51.5.
Chico State claimed the team title for the second straight year and sixth time in the last eight years with 33 points, well ahead of second-place UC San Diego (84). Cal Poly Pomona (91) was third followed by Cal State L.A. (101), Cal State Stanislaus (142), Humboldt State (146), San Francisco State (162) and the Coyotes (191). Sonoma State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Monterey Bay were far back.
Vivian Wadeck of Cal State L.A. defended her individual title, winning the 6K run in 21:52.6, finishing 21 seconds ahead of runnerup Bre Schofield of UCSD.
"We were the youngest team there," said Coyotes Head Coach Tom Burleson. "It was a good rac e and the kids competed well. We're shooting for a top 10 finish at the NCAA West Regional in two weeks."
Borman was the third fastest freshman in the field and four of the top six Coyote finishers were freshman and one was a sophomore.
Sophomore Nikki Chesnut, the team's No. 1 runner in 2008, was 47th in 25:12.3 followed by freshman Courtney Ciraulo in 50th spot in 25:22.5. Another freshman, Deserae Perez, was 52nd in 25:34.0.
